Hello:
I usually take the supplement Bromelain to help with inflammation.
I've just read several medical articles which assert that Bromelain can potentiate Amoxicillin (and Tetracycline) and increase its levels in blood. In fact, it is often used to do just that.
My concern is that it might also increase its side-effects. Especially since I'm now taking 2 grams of it daily.
However , I also read-in journal article- that it can decrease side-effects of these antibiotics, as well as potentiating them:
===================
"Bromelain increases bioavailability and reduces the side effects that are associated with various antibiotics (12,13)"[
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4998156/
[cut and paste above link into browser for it to work]
==================
So far , this is only source I have found for reducing side effects. Much of the literature only references increasing blood levels of Amoxicillin.
An article surveying the medical literature on Bromelain does discuss its potentiating effects on some antibiotics and does discuss a study where some who failed to respond to antibiotics for diverse conditions (H.Pylori wasnt among them in that particular study) did succeed when the antibiotic was combined with Bromelain. Here's reference to that survey of the literature:
Bromelain: A Literature Review and
Discussion of its Therapeutic Applications

So... I'm wondering if I really should be discontinuing Bromelain during the course of this triple therapy? It is a useful supplement for me.
Thank you

Re: Bromelain: Effect on amoxicillin?
it's interesting.. however i have no experience on it. Since it's no harm, you can go ahead and try it.
Re: Bromelain: Effect on amoxicillin?
Thanks...My concern is that it might increase Amoxicillin levels in the blood, as the research suggests it might. They dont however say by how much. Often the term "potentiate" is used instead..which sounds better

Amoxicillin is pretty safe. Very little side effect and can use in high dose. Prof Marshall usually prescribe 3g a day.
